Aaah the Tarot, not to be confused with the purple root vegetable the taro. These various decks of cards have been used across the old world by various people. Yet modern media only depicts them as a mystical tool of divination, yet while true is only the surface.

Now before I continue I must shed some light on these “mystical” cards that would cause gypsies and hard core fanatics to call me a charlatan. Yet these are words of truth and should not be burried by those who only seek to take coin. The tarot above all else is a GAME, that’s right a game. These various decks are the ancestors of today’s modern playing cards and even originated some of the classic games we know today.

The easiest example is the game of “war”, as we currently know it. This was normally played by people each with their own Tarot deck as it was considered a common item in traveler camps. The players would follow rules we know with the only difference being the Major Arcana. These are your cards such as “the fool” and “the chariot” each one trumps a standard card and are then beaten out by any Major Arcana with a higher number. (Between 0-22 is the common standard of today’s Tarot.) With the first besting the last if played second, much like aces high.

For those still reading let me share how I came upon the cards and began my journey. I was attempting film school, half the country away all alone. I was at the local mall and found a “mysticism” shop. Being only 17 at the time I naturally went into the place. Near the counter was a small shelf and table with various decks and books on Tarot. I browsed through the designs of fairies and other such “feminine” style of decks. When suddenly from the very back I spied a serpent with a gapping maw. It was a Dragon themed deck of both major and minor arcana. I picked it up then and their in in the five years I never regretted that 10$USD purchase.

My next part will cover the minor arcana and how it has changed and been formed into today’s modern Playing cards!
